Anybody who knows me IRL knows that it broke my heart that I couldn't go to the recent Need reunion shows on the West coast. So, so sad. But here are some videos of the shows in Olympia and Portland that happened last week! Pretty crappy quality, but at least you get to see that Rachel still wears shorts and a bandana for every show. Totally awesome!
While hanging out with Miss Thing last night (who we normally don't get to hang with because she lives in SF!) we stumbled upon the subject of Kenneth Anger. I've been a fan of his work for a long time, but I think it's especially relevant right now with all the dark/occult-y stuff that's permeating indie culture. So even though I think I've posted these before, his work is brilliant and it's always worth a re-watching.
Below you will find Fireworks, Scorpio Rising, Invocation of my Demon Brother, and Lucifer Rising. And if you want to see more, jump over here to find more of his work!
ATTN: PDX! I found out about the Not Enough! Festival through a friend's post on Facebook and it seems like a really cool project. Not Enough! will be a two day festival featuring new collaborative projects from queer artists in Portland. This is a really great idea for a festival and who knows, maybe you'll become the next Cloud Eye Control, Gossip, Third Sex, or maybe you'll just have a ton of fun and make new friends!
Check out the details as well as some stuff from the aforementioned Portland projects below.
This is a call-out to Portland’s communities. We want to encourage people in the diverse queer and LGBTQIXYZ communities of Portland to collaborate and create NEW projects for a process-based experimental music-art-performance festival occurring September 18th and 19th. Not Enough! is a festival that has come out of the desire to create safe, loving, and inclusive spaces for queers to perform in, while at the same time strengthening communication, bonding, and cohesion of those who perform in the festival. It has come out of the desire to have queers and those at the periphery create their own fun spaces to experiment, collaborate, and learn from. We want to meet you! We want to have fun!
We ask of you: ● Create something BRAND NEW (make something for this festival) ● Categorize your work as either MUSIC ART OR PERFORMANCE/ETC ● Collaborate (meet a new friend, take up that old offer from that acquaintance) ● Experiment (we want new forms of music/art/performance to arise) ● Create something that has a maximum length of 25 minutes
Let us know what you want to do: Send us a brief statement about your project(s): Music: punkstartmyheart@gmail.com Art: sergio_torres67@yahoo.com Peformance/Etc: feds01@gmail.com
You've made mistakes. Drinking and driving is something you should never have done (or do ever again!). And I suppose you should've been more careful when around people who were drinking so you didn't get alcohol spilled on you, causing your SCRAM bracelet to go off. And maybe you should've tried to work out of the country when you weren't scheduled to be at a court date. And maybe you should've taken better care of your passport so you didn't lose it while working in Cannes. But everyone makes mistakes and we're still with you Lindsay Lohan. I even watched that movie on TV where you were fake pregnant.
So now you're going to jail. It'll be okay. You can read and workout and maybe quit smoking and not get anymore collagen pumped into your lips (you look better without it)...you'll be fine. And when you get out, you'll get paid like a million dollars to give your story to People magazine and you'll go on Oprah or something and you'll be all set. Maybe you can even start dating SamRon again? That would be fun.
In conclusion, we'll miss your face on our favorite celebrity gossip sites over the next 20-something days - but you'll be in our hearts. And we're gonna listen to "Bossy" every day until you are free.
Thanks to Twitter I was reminded (and by reminded I mean this is something I learned in school at some point but would have never actually remembered) that on this day in 1692 Sarah Good, Elizabeth Howe, Susannah Martin, Sarah Wildes, and Rebecca Nurse were executed as witches in Salem, Massachusetts. As we know, these women -and over a hundred more women and men (but mostly women) were accused, jailed, or executed as witches because the Puritans wanted their land, were afraid of what independent women would do to their "moral" society, or were just total nutso Christian douchebags.
In 2010 witch hunts have morphed into slightly more covert operations and witches (real, fictional, metaphorical) are the inspiration for a whole genre of music. So let's celebrate that we can generally be as dark-arty as we wanna be with little more than some idiots protesting it on a website as consequence. (Unless you are in West Memphis, AR - Free the WM3) BUT let's also remember that there are still a lot of people being persecuted here and all over the world based on gender, sexuality, race, religion and countless other stupid things. Maybe they aren't being hanged or burned at the stake, (and maybe they are) but there are plenty of other ways to ruin lives.
I'm not trying to get all political here, that's generally not our M.O., but reading about the Salem witch trials today made me think about some junk, so I thought I'd share a few short thoughts. But that's enough with the real talk, let's listen to some witchy music.
If you live in San Francisco I highly recommend that you attend the above event, at which you will be able to marvel at the beautiful artwork and photography of Prayers for Children co-founder and co-curator Jody Jock. Sadly I am out of town and unable to attend, but if one of you fine readers attend then you can tell me all about it!
If you aren't into paying lots of money and being surrounded by yuppies trying to bro down with you about Modest Mouse at Pitchfork this weekend, then Bitchpork is the answer for your music festival needs. I'll admit Pitchfork definitely has some great artists playing, but the thought of paying $40 (or more) to be annoyed in 90 degree weather is not something I'm trying to do. Besides that, many of the artists who are performing would probably be better suited for a not-Pitchfork type of show, i.e. it would be better to see them in a club, bar, basement or whatever. So yes, I'd love to see a lot of the bands playing, but not like that.
So back to Bitchpork. Bitchpork is the underground alternative to Pitchfork and it starts tonight. It's 64 punk, noise, experimental, lo-fi, garage, weirdo electronic and whatever bands in 3 days at $12 bucks a day or $30 for a weekend pass. Sounds like an awesome time if you ask me! I'm not gonna lie, I haven't heard of most of the bands playing, but half the fun of a festival is finding out about new stuff. Also, the bands I have heard of are definitely worth checking out live.
Check out some music from a few of the bands and an awesome promo video and the full schedule below!

I'm sick of the internet thus no posts in quite some time. Also, I'm kind of sick of "internet music". I just want to listen to The Need and Team Dresch and dream of being some dirty punk lez on the West Coast. But blogging must go on and as you can see with my totes hip title, new details have been released on Corin Tucker's solo project. "What details?" you ask. Title, tracklist and cover art. Also included in the Pitchfork article was this tidbit: some of these songs were originally written for "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse". Interesting.
Twilight or no, I'm still excited to hear what she and her bandmates have been working on. And I'm STILL waiting on you Ms. Brownstein.

I'm just gonna put this out there: The Need is Dead is one of the best albums ever written. It's dark, complex, dykey, totally weird and generally genius. The weird thing about this record, and The Need in general, is that they're kind of under-appreciated. I mean, fans of theirs get how awesome they are, but this record (and the band, really) never blew up like they should have. Maybe their experimental, circus, sci fi, future metal sound isn't as palatable as some other bands of the period, but I honestly don't see how anyone could listen to this record and not fall instantly in love with it. It's just SO good and unlike anything else.
I could go on and on about The Need and "The Need is Dead", but I won't. Just go BUY this record. You won't regret it and you'll be supporting some of the coolest, nicest, most amazing musicians I've ever met. (I once saved a voicemail from Rachel Carns for probably a year).
If you're lucky enough to be in Portland, The Need (and Bangs!) will be reuniting one night only for a benefit show at Berbati's Pan. DON'T MISS IT PDX.
So here's the deal...I'm going to post one of my favorite songs from the album because, like I said earlier, The Need never got that famous. Since you may have never heard them, check out this song...BUT if you like what you hear please BUY THE RECORD!
