Lesbian Sisterhood

There's been a lot of activity amongst lesbian sisters in the last couple of days. Specifically a new single from 1/2 queer sister pair CocoRosie and a new remix album from double lesbian sisters Tegan & Sara.

We posted about CocoRosie's upcoming fourth album a few days back (along with the totally awesome LP cover art) but since then the first single "Lemonade" has been leaked or released. (..who knows these days?) Anyways, we have it here for you to check out!

We haven't posted much about Tegan and Sara's latest album Sainthood but their new 17-track remix album for their song Alligator (released yesterday) has piqued our interest. First of all, it's kind of insane that they commissioned 17 different remixes of the same song. Secondly, the remixes are by artists we like. Third, judging by the previews of the remixes I've listened to, most of the remixes are pretty good! So far the Toro Y Moi remix is the only one floating around the 'net, but you can buy the other 16 versions on iTunes.

Check out CocoRosie's new song and the Toro Y Moi remix of Alligator below!

Gay Kids

I just have two words for you people:

swishy kids

enjoy. xo

Boy Crazy!

Y'all, Spring is coming. And we all know what that means. Gays all around the the U.S. are getting a little boy crazier than usual. It's the weather. When it's warm, all we (and by we, I mean MYSELF) wanna do is rock denim cut offs, baby shoes, and fucking dance our asses from city block to city block. It also doesn't help the fact that I just FINALLY got around to seeing "New Moon" and Mr. Jacob Black has been the source of many a disgusting, filthy thought. It's okay y'all, he's 18. Barely legal but still legal, so get off my back. It's been a LONG ass time since anyone touched me like that.

To celebrate this massive insanity, I've been listening to a few jams. Over and over. Nicki Minaj, my new fave rapper and femme 3/4 dyke, has released her first official single with Sean Garrett entitled "Massive Attack". When I first caught wind of this, I was like girl PLEASE sample Massive Attack! But she didn't. Instead we get a weird ass romper with sirens, references to the Middle East, and Mr. Miyagi pops in at some point. This bitch has the vocabulary of a stoner bitch and that's why I like her. It's a great first solo single after many a great guest feature (MIMI, Ludacris, Young Money).

Tanlines is a band that came round recently and the music matches the name. Tropicalia infused electro is 1 of like, 924712 ways I could describe it. They sort of took almost where Discovery left off and ran with it to the Bahamas or something. It's really exciting after a barren winter full of bullshit releases.

Tanlines - Real Life

Nicki Minaj - Massive Attack (ft. Sean Garrett)

Also, this is how my Spring/Summer 2010 is gonna go: SHOP. BALLOONS. WALKING ON AIR. FLYING BICYCLES. It's gonna be sick.

U Don't Like Rock N Roll Video

Photo via Viceland

The video for Hunx & His Punx' "U Don't Like Rock N Roll" was released today. The video features Hunx in a leopard print leotard and his new band of Punkettes scowling and growling along to the garage-pop song and hazing a non-rockin Liza fan. I don't think all the girls in the video are actually the girls who play in the band, but either way they don't look like they're messing around and I love it!

Check out the video, a Teengirl Fantasy remix of Hunx' "Dontcha" and a song from the Punkettes' bass player Shannon and her other band Shannon and the Clams.

Terminal Twilight

Do you ever think about what would have happened if Twin Peaks had lasted longer? Or if it was on TV now instead of in the 90's? I do. It's a thought I have kind of a lot, but here's one reason why it's recently come to mind: Terminal Twilight's cover of Jody Reynolds' 1958 song The Fire of Love. That would be the perfect song for Terminal Twilight as a 2010 version of The Roadhouse band to play. BUT let's hope a remake of Twin Peaks NEVER happens, so that thought can just live in my nerdy mind.

Back to Terminal Twilight.

The LA duo's other songs are a little more slow mo disco and a little less Julee Cruise, but are still total gems reminiscent of a Dario Argento film or 4 AM, or a Dario Argento film at 4 AM, either way. The standout track upon discovering them and listening to songs from their recently released 45rpm 12" Black and Blue is the title song. Black and Blue is a 120bpm jam full of subdued horror movie panic via layered ice cold female vocals and vintage synths...or in other words, everything I want a song to be. Actually all of the songs on their Myspace page are definitely worth checking out and if you like what you hear be sure to jump over to Infinite Soundtracks to buy the record and support a brand new indie label.

As for right now you and I can listen to (and watch the video for) The Fire of Love. Also, that gum you like is going to come back in style.

Happy Birthday Mimi

Not gonna lie, I have a pretty huge soft spot for pop music. The first CD I ever bought was a maxi-single of Madonna's Vogue and (besides Guns N Roses) my favorite tapes as a kid were Mariah Carey's Emotions and The Bodyguard soundtrack. Although I've obviously moved on to like tons of different types of music, I still think there's something pretty amazing about songs that millions of people love to hear and sing along to. So today, in honor of Mariah Carey's birthday, let's totally diva out on some pop remixes!

Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance with Somebody (TGIK Remix)

Madonna - Vogue (Bette Davis Pose 12" Mix)

Kylie Minogue - 2 Hearts (The Twelves Remix)

Beyonce f. Nicki Minaj & Lil Wayne - Sweet Dreams (No Ceilings Remix)

More after the cut!

Grey Oceans

CocoRosie will be releasing their fourth record Grey Oceans this May on Sub Pop. They haven't released a new single yet, but they have put out their totally AWESOME cover art and a couple of spooky scary teaser videos. I have to admit, I've never been a huge fan of CocoRosie but this might just be the record to finally win me over.

Check out the teaser videos and a song I like from CocoRosie below!

Queerer Park

Chicago - If you haven't been to Queerer Park you're totally missing out. Queerer Park is, as you could guess, a dance party for queers, allies and weirdos that roams around town bringing you a fun time and good music each month. I DJed the party last month with two other awesome girl DJs and it was the most fun I've had in a long time. This month DJs Barbara Butch & Unisexy, Black Gold and Reagonomix are your selectors so it looks like it's gonna be another good one! Also, it's not just a good time...it's a benefit for Chicago Books to Women in Prison, an all-volunteer collective that mails paperback books to women in prisons in nine states. So drink up for charity!

See you there?
Flopsy Tea House
2736 W. North Ave.
(Entrance through alley)

To give you an idea of the party, here are a few songs that were played last month!

Glass Candy - Feeling Without Touching Video

Glass Candy released their first "official" video this morning. That band has been around for at least 10 years...how is this their first "official" video!? Crazy. Anyways, although it is ultra simple the clip is a great representation of Glass Candy's song. Dancing, disco lights, Ida No looking bored...seems just about right. Enjoy the video and one of my favorite Glass Candy remixes!

Pop Goes The World

The video for Gossip's Pop Goes The World was released today. The clip is a fairly straightforward performance video plus some fake laser color grids and Hannah's Oliver Sim-esque haircut. Not the most exciting video I've ever seen, but it makes sense to try to capture Gossip's performance magic.

Check it out along with the amazing Fake Blood remix of Love Long Distance! AND if you STILL haven't gotten Music For Men yet...you should do that here.

Sleater Kinney Reunion?!

There are some things that will never change. I will always wish I was a little bit taller, I will always prefer the Crayola bold markers over the classic colors and I will always love Sleater Kinney. My heart broke a little bit when they went on an indefinite hiatus in 2006. That said, you could imagine my excitement when I checked out Tiny Mix Tapes this morning to find that Carrie Brownstein had mentioned a possible S/K reunion in a recent interview!

So...she didn't say that they were definitely reuniting, but she did say: "Well, Janet, Corin and I are still great friends. And we will probably do something. It's so intense, that band" which is more of a confirmation than we've gotten in the past. Although she didn't confirm a Sleater Kinney reunion, she did confirm that she's working on new music in a new four-piece band that once again features Janet Weiss on drums. She mentioned in the interview that they are based in Portland, although all of the members do not live there, and they have written 7 songs so far. So even if we can't look forward to new Sleater Kinney anytime soon, this is something to be excited about for sure!

If you want to hear about the feature film Carrie Brownstein just premiered at SXSW and more about S/K, ThunderAnt and more over here.

While we anxiously await more news on Carrie's new project and a Sleater Kinney reunion, check out some classics!

The Gay 90's: Video Games

Be you boy of gay, straight, bisexual, or trans nature of Generation Y variety, we all have 1 thing in common: we love video games. At some point in life, the calling for Mario, Sonic, Crash Bandicoot, Donkey Kong, whatever you want, when we are called, we must play.

More after the cut. Because it's a long one. And I am passionate about video games. I got my Masters in it.

And who doesn't love video games? I often joke about how weird it is when someone defies a universally loved thing, but it is no joke. If you don't like video games, I can probably guarantee I won't be liking you. There are often exceptions (I have a friend who can't stand them, your guess is as good as mine), but seriously? How can you hate? There are ALWAYS good memories attached to video games. I remember every weekend from grade 4 onwards was just beating Super Mario or playing Super Street Fighter. All of this accompanied by pizza, chips, soda, and god knows what else I ate back then. Seriously chubs. Of course eventually one must graduate to Mortal Kombat (My bitch was Mileena. She ATE people. Beat that, Sub-Zero). Fuck him UP.

Well actually, when I think about it, video games definitely didn't get the full on love from girls when I was a kid. For me, it mostly cause I liked the RPGs or fighting games which bored off my gal pals, but we always went back to the cute games. Because ripping out people's spines gets repetitive while hopping on mushrooms and punching brick to get coins is forever. Anyone remember Donkey Kong Country for SNES? That game was awesome. I'd always die way before the end of it, but isn't that the best part of video games? You get SO into it and lose. But that next time you very well might beat King R. Cool. I'd always remember passing out at like, 6am because I was on such an adrenaline rush. Because once you start Donkey Kong Country, you're in it until you beat it or die.

I of course, had no Nintendo. MY parents thought to spite me and bought a fucking Sega Genesis. Because they felt real bad, they threw in a Sega CD with Echo The Dolphin. Man that game was scary as shit. Like, why won't sharks leave Echo alone? He's just trying to find his FAMILY (This of course would go on to influence many a teen awkward situation). Basically what I am trying to say is that I spent my youth kicking it with Sonic more than Mario. You're probably wondering what exactly is gay about this post. Anyone remember the music? How could that not turn anyone gay? Of course, I don't think that's what video games had in mind, but they need to take responsibility for their actions. Video game music turns 10 out of every 100 boys gay. Fact.

I listened to this shit for 10 years before I left for college. CONSTANTLY. My mom would always yell at me in the basement to turn it down. For a bevy of reasons. Usually it was they could hear it form their bedroom 2 flights up, but sometimes it was that they couldn't hear whatever it was they were watching on tv (Bette Midler 80's weirdo movies or Disney Princess classics). I was a bad boy.

Off topic: Here is a video of some hipster boys hopping around to the Mortal Kombat theme song TECHNOED ALL OUT. This was the second hit after searching "Mortal Kombat" on YouTube. This is the best the internet has to offer and for that, I am SO grateful.

Later music would go on to influence modern day electro. Don't even try to front, Bubble Bobble will always be my fave electronic song. It has EVERYTHING. Video games are so cool, Yelle is doing shit for Super Monkey Ball:

Now Super Monkey Ball is the game of the future. It's almost my new Mario. You're a monkey. In a ball. Finding bananas or your kidnapped friends or something. But seriously, I wish we could go back. To the classics. What the hell is Halo? Call Of Duty? I don't want to watch myself in video game world bombing shit and cutting throats. I want to jump on shit and find chaos emeralds and rescue princesses. When the hell did games get so boring?

THE BIGGEST DISCO QUEEN OF THE XXI CENTURY

Hard Ton is a big fat awesome Italian disco queen who has two EPs filled with jams that channel acid house and all the best parts of disco. His recently released records titled Flawless and Selfish feature some of the faggiest and best dance music I've heard in a WHILE and they're just a lot of fun to listen to. He's not reinventing the disco ball here, as his references are totally blatant, but he's still making music that sounds fresh. It is also an unabashedly gay addition to the nu disco scene that seems surprisingly thin in gayness. Jump over here and here to pick up the digital EPs and enjoy a few jams and videos below!

Billionaire Video

The long awaited video for Peaches' Billionaire f. Shunda K has been released. I can definitely say this is my favorite video from the I Feel Cream collection. Love the tripped out and hilarious Wizard of Oz theme that was used...not sure if that was her idea or director Cody Critcheloe's? Also want to give a nod to Ari Fish & Peggy Noland for the styling and costumes! Great stuff.

Check it along the Drums of Death remix of the track and another Shunda K jam.

Explode Into Colors

Having internet friends is pretty awesome. You get to find out about all kinds of cool stuff that may have not come up on your radar without them. I can credit our #1 blog crush Soul Ponies for keeping us up on all things queercore and riot grrrl and introducing us to Portland's Explode Into Colors a while back.

Explode Into Colors is a three piece band of "weird aunts" who make bassy-funky-arty-ghosty-dancey-rock music, knit, teach drums, make clothes and pretty much rule. Explode Into Colors are actually pretty hard to describe (see above attempt) because their sound is actually unique, unlike a lot of stuff you hear "these days". The combination of baritone guitar, melodica, the occasional sax and sort of psychedelic production all comes together to make music that doesn't sound like anything besides good.

Claudia Meza, Lisa Schonberg and Heather Treadway have been making music together as EIC since 2008 and have put out a tape and few 7"'s on M'Lady's Records, Just For The Hell Of It Records and Kill Rock Stars so far. As far as I can tell though, there isn't a full length on the way anytime soon so pick up the singles while you still can here or here!.

You can also catch Explode Into Colors on tour with Quasi and tonight and tomorrow at SXSW. If you are stuck in your respective city and not at South By put on these songs and imagine you are sweaty and drunk and it'll be almost like you're there!

Teengirl Fantasy remixed Light Asylum

Me and about 30 other people saw Teengirl Fantasy last year when they opened for Telepathe at the Empty Bottle. I can't speak for those people, but I've been a fan ever since. Teengirl Fantasy make psyched out, mind-dance music and they remix all our favorite songs. They've already remixed Pictureplane & Hunx and His Punx and now they have done an awesome rework of Light Asylum's Shallow Tears. They take the dreamy original and amp it up a little without losing that something that makes the original so special. It's not a club version by any stretch, but the remix feels lighter, more dancefloor friendly and could be a great song to end a night of dancing.

Check it out along with one of Teengirl Fantasy's originals.

We Are Born Preview

Sia has posted 6 full tracks on her website from her upcoming album We Are Born. It's kind of hard to get a feel from the album by only hearing half, but it seems full of straightforward pop songs* that will probably be a great summertime listen. Sia will also be setting out on a world tour in April, so you'll probably get to hear the rest of the album sooner than the June release date.

Take a listen to a couple of the songs here and jump over to Sia's website for the rest and her tour dates.

*When I say pop you know I mean like pop in the good way, not pop in the Ke$ha-Katy Perry-messy garbage sort of way. Speaking of pop..here's Sia's take on Britney's Gimme More.

Eurovision 2010: Never Forget

Man, America is missing out in the worst way possible. Eurovision 2010 is already at the final stages, but along the way, gays everywhere have been striking stoner gold on YouTube. I've compiled all these performances in one post because these men (or in Eric Saade's case, manboys) have 1 thing in common: they all look like Donny Osmond at some point in his creepy somewhat successful career. Peter is a direct throwback to Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Case in point:

How do I know of this? Oh yes children, when your mother is a big musical theatre junkie, whether you like it or not, at some point it rubs off on you. Real badly. There isn't a day where "All That Jazz" isn't in my head. THANKS MOM.

First things first: This dude Eric Saade is a presenter for some Swedish kids television show. Secondly: Please pour more water on him. He can be my manboy any day of the week. And by manboy I mean do all my errands for me.

Peter Joback (I can't figure out how to to do an umlaut) knows how to let loose and have some good old fashioned all-American power ballad fun with structured militaristic jackets and fringe. Side note: Does anyone know how to do the umlaut on a Mac? Listen, don't get huffy with me, I just figured out how to do a screen cap so eat it.

This was from last year, but as you can see, they really should just have Dima Bilan come back every year to start the festival with this exact same performance. WIRES. TREADMILLS. PAPER WALLS. CONFETTI. ANGELS. PAPARAZZI. What more do you people want out of life? Because I am ful-FILLED. Also, I major LOLed when his jacket got caught on his wires and he couldn't get it off. So he finally gets to that rage boiling point and turns around the get it off and still NOTHING GOES HIS WAY. Thank you, backup dancer.

Still no idea

Ok, totally going out on a limb here...but the voice in this new iamamiwhoami sounds exactly like Bat for Lashes to me. Could Natasha Khan be behind this project? Granted, she just came out with a record last summer and I haven't heard of a follow up being made, but if this isn't Natasha Khan singing there's someone that sounds A LOT like her involved.

Obviously the girl in this video is disguised, perhaps she's disguised in all of them and is not really blond all. Her blue eyes are definitely contacts and the image is heavily distorted. I'm not saying that this is necessarily Bat for Lashes in the video or her project exclusively, but I wouldn't be surprised if she (and potentially other vocalists) have lent their talents to some other artist.

Also take note of the men in the video, they seem to be disguised as well. It's not a positive ID, but they could easily be Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge, aka Royksopp. Anybody remember their collaboration with Robyn? How about when they featured Karin Dreijer Andersson on vocals? It's not unlikely that this is something like that.

But what do we know? We've been sure it was Christina Aguilera, Little Boots, The Golden Filter, Goldfrapp and everyone in between. Anyways, watch and discuss.

Bat for Lashes - Daniel (Fazhands Remix)

Bat for Lashes - Pearl's Dream (Blossom and Surrender remix)

Royksopp - The Girl And The Robot (ft. Robyn)

EDIT: Thanks to a comment from our friend Carla (and this theory blowing up on the whole rest of the internet) we may now finally know who iamamiwhoami actually is. There's a lot of evidence pointing to Swedish artist Jonna Lee. There are definitely some physical similarities, the whole Swedish thing, some twitter updates and other stuff pointing to her...so this could very well be it for the mystery. I still think the voice sounds like Bat for Lashes more than what I've listened to from Jonna Lee, but any voice can be manipulated so I guess that's not saying much.

So here's a track from Jonna Lee and a photo to compare. I'm kind of sad that this could be the end, and a kind of disappointing one at that.

Fuck Winter 2010

I do apologize for my music links being a bit wonky this week. Apparently, you've all cause SO much traffic that it's been temporarily shut down. I assume that's a good thing? It just means I'm sharing music with people who REALLY love music. Pop music, weirdo noise music, whatever. And that's what this blog is all about aka sharing things with people who'd be interested and receptive to what we're doing. So thank you guys for fucking up my Dropbox account <3.

In other news, warm weather has finally hit Chicago and everywhere around the city people are breathing a sigh of relief. Winter sucked. It was terrible. It really is the fucking one thing that never fails to send me aboard a train to shit town.

Wait, what's that you say? It's spring? AND there is new music by the handful waiting to be released? Oh shiiiittttt. These songs have popped up in the past few weeks and they've really set the mood off for THE BEST SUMMER EVER.

First up is The Pipettes! I recently gave away their teaser track "Our Love Was Saved By The Spaceman", which was an upbeat ditty about aliens erasing a bad boyfriend's mind. Where are these aliens and please help a bitch out on Earth. After losing their record deal/leaving their labels Cherrytree/Interscope AND Memphis Industries, and having about a half dozen members leave, The Pipettes are returning April 19th with the release of the "Stop The Music" single on FORTUNA POP(The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Allo Darlin, Tender Trap). It's a real melancholy disco romper. And by disco, I don't mean Sylvester. God I love Sylvester.

Yeasayer "ONE" By: Radical Friend from ODDBLOOD on Vimeo.

Yeasayer have released the first single and video from their second album "Odd Blood" and this is like, the exact opposite direction I'd thought they'd go towards. Their first album was really jangly with hints of pop floor madness, but they really took the concept and ran the fuck out with it. "O.N.E." is a smash (Although it's not their first mainstream entry to pop world, that would be their collab with Simian Mobile Disco on the "Audacity Of Huge" track). I'm really excited for whatever else they can think of.

I'll be back sometimes with proper links, but it's warm outside and I have the day off and frankly, I just wanna sit on my back porch and jam out. Spring 2010 is gonna be the best Spring ever. Fuck haters.
