Christina Aguilera's "Not Myself Tonight" video

Sigh.

I have long been a great lover & admirer of Christina's. I saw her on the Stripped/Justified tour and cried because she was really, truly incredible. I even have a keychain of a Stripped-era Xtina on my keychain. But this video- wait, let's start with the song. Who the heck chose this as the first single? I have faith that the album will have some killer songs, but I think this is a real misstep. In the current pop climate you either have to bring something ultra-new or ultra-catchy, and this is neither. Though I could see it going down well at the club. After a few drinks. Maybe.

And the video...I do love the big 1940s bangs look. And who doesn't like latex? And I will always support Christina doing her bi-girl thing. But everything else makes my heart hurt a little bit, especially the super lazy advertisement of her perfume line.

What do y'all think?

  1. It's kinda weird how she recreates a couple of Madonna videos, no? Has she said anything about that? Also, you are totally right on about the song being mediocre. This isn't gonna wow anyone.

  2. im not gonna lie this song has really grown on me, its the fag in me maybe. and the video is a complete tribute to madonna so how can that be so wrong. i kind of love the drums too. i expect a lot lot lot more from the rest of the album but i have to say out of most the pop divas its refreshing to know she has a good voice and can actually dance.

  3. rchrd,

i get that the video is a tribute to madonna...and tributes to madonna are always welcome...but don't you think with all the hype on xtina's new album and the comparisons to gaga she would wanna try to show how unique and amazing she can be w the first video/single?

the song isn't bad by any means..it's a pop jam for sure...but just not anything groundbreaking or whatever. especially since she worked w awesome people on the record...there's gotta be better stuff to jump off with! she is super talented, that's why it's a bit disappointing to me.

  4. I think she's not like "hey guys, i'm making a madonna tribute!" because it's uh... a little obvious. no need to sound it out for the youngins.

and i like this song, but i know it's not her best. i think artists are smart to save their best track for the second single, because then it's like WOOAAHHH take notice! instead of 'man that first song was so good, but everything else must be lame"

so so so excited for this album

  5. jackie, i agree, 1st singles from an album often arent the best, so i have high hopes for the next one! & this one is by no means terrible- it just doesn't really stand out against anything else on the radio, which i guess is what i was hoping for. but i will always ALWAYS have big love in my heart for xtina. she was really my 1st adult popstar crush.

  6. I assume she is putting out the most mass friendly songs on the album out as to not scare her fans, but i have faith in her. she definitely seems like one of the few pop stars that knows what she wants and will do it anyway. this track was also written in last minute for the album. im pretty sure she got this track written for her label which was probably telling her to put out a song thats more radio friendly. we'll see.
