Devolution

Just got a message from Electrosexual reminding us about his newest song 'Devolution'. Totally meant to post this video ages ago--especially since it's made up of stills and clips from Liquid Sky, one of my favorite movies--but things happen and blogging gets neglected.

Anyways, I like the direction Electrosexual is going with the track and I'm looking forward to hearing more! Check out Electrosexual on Myspace and Facebook to keep up with the haps.

Enjoy the video and download the song for FREE!

Ultra Hate

Young Creature friend and fave Fire Island, AK just sent us some info on a noisy new project. ULTRA HATE, an Internet-only EP was recently released on the Collective Family (CLLCT.com) for free streaming and download. t.boettner describes his latest project as "a strange remix album of sorts. mixes of gay house music (ew), a familiar disco standard, bits of my older work, and some other insanity." Ultra Hate is definitely a break from our usual fare, but as I've said before, I really appreciate when members of our community break away from the same old song and dance (routine). Jump over here to listen to and/or download the tracks!

Also, this would be an awesome EP to put on during Halloween. Forget Thriller, put something on that is actually dark and unnerving to celebrate a holiday that should be more about demons and less about sexy bees.

Here's the track that samples the "familiar disco standard":

Stuck!

After being reminded that the 28th Annual Reeling Film Festival is coming up by our friends at Think Pink Radio, I decided to take a look at the lineup to see what to look forward to from Chicago's Gay and Lesbo film fest. The FIRST thing I noticed was that Mink Stole, one of the genius stars of all the best John Waters movies, was gonna make an appearance! Then, I saw that not only is Mink making an appearance, she's in one of the films being screened.

The movie is called Stuck! and is an homage to the women in prison B movie genre of the 60's (and beyond) and was made by filmmaker Steve Balderson. As you would imagine, the movie is about a group of women in prison and their "struggles" but it's probably mostly about lesbianism. If that's not intriguing enough, it also features Karen Black (The actress/namesake of The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black) and Jane Wiedlin from The Go-Go's, so see it for the weird stars if nothing else. B/Exploitation movies are probably one of my favorite things in world, so I'm excited to see a throwback to the women in prison genre that contained some great ones like Caged Heat and Women in Cages

Here's the trailer and mark your calendars for the Chicago screening on Friday November 6th! Also--There's a "Lesbian Lockdown/Jail Break" at Circuit (that I WILL NOT be attending) afterwards if you're into that sort of thing.

WTF 2009

Dear Adam Lambert,

I don't really like you. I don't care for your singing. But that's not to say I don't worry for your sanity. Please tell me this is just a cruel joke being pulled after a night out boozin and schmoozin. I will even do your album art for free if you promise not to release this.

Sincerely,
Micah

another amazing project from Cody Critcheloe and SSION.

The Birdwisher

If you listen to Blatz, Cypher in the Snow or The Gr'ups then you know that fierce femme Anna Joy Springer is an incredible vocalist & lyricist. What you may not know is that she now teaches writing at UCSD and writes fabulous, grotesque and beautiful books, and one of those books is out now from Birds of Lace!

The Birdwisher
is a novella about a girl, a pigeon-detective and a murderous mystery. Written after Dashiell Hammet's "Dead Yellow Woman," The Birdwisher is beautifully illustrated throughout by Sam McWilliams. Noir in style and rendered in gorgeous inventive prose, The Birdwisher is the first book from Birds of Lace and Anna Joy's debut novella.

You can read the prologue from the book & order it here (highly recommended). In the meantime, check out this video from The Gr'ups, "Lil Lost":

or watch this video of Anna Joy reading her entry from Encyclopedia: A-E

You can also check out more of Anna Joy's work here and here. Happy reading!

Bruce LaBruce - L.A. Zombie

The 1st trailer for Bruce LaBruce's "L.A. Zombie" has been released. Revisiting the zombie and porn genres he worked with on his last film "Otto; Or, Up with Dead People", "L.A. Zombie" stars porn star Francois Sagat (who LaBruce worked with previously on his installation "Untitled Hardcore Zombie Project" a few months back) and features appearances from out rapper Deadlee and Project Runway alum Santino Rice .

You can read Bruce's writing on "L.A. Zombie" and his history with the idea of zombies and porn in his work after the cut and check out the Gay of the Dead story on Bruce LaBruce and the film on Fangoria.

"Zombies and porn. What a beautiful combination. I have been dealing in both genres since the early nineties when I made No Skin Off My Ass, my first sexually explicit feature film, and co-starred in my friend Candys short film Interview with a Zombie, in which I played a gay member of the undead. Against all professional advice, I've been making porn movies ever since, albeit reluctantly. (I'm not a particularly avid consumer of porn, and I don't follow the industry; not unpretentiously, I consider myself not so much a pornographer as an artist who works in porn"

After making three sexually explicit features films (NSOMA, Super 8 1/2, and Hustler White), in 1999 I wrote and directed my first legitimate porno film, Skin Flick, made under the auspices of the German porn company Cazzo Films. The subject was neo-Nazi skinheads, characters that, one could argue, have a certain zombie-like quality. The hardcore version, released under the title Skin Gang, was a full-on pornographic product shot in a relatively conventional porn style, and packaged and promoted with an adult entertainment industry in mind. (It was even nominated for nine gay adult video awards in the U.S.)

My following film, The Raspberry Reich (2004), about a gang of extreme left wing would-be terrorists another zombie-esque bunch was also conceived as a porn product, although the softcore version, which nonetheless contained sexually explicit material, managed to play at over 150 film festivals worldwide. (The hardcore version, entitled The Revolution Is My Boyfriend, was released by the porn company Wurstfilm.) In 2008 I finally stopped pussyfooting around the living dead them and made an actual zombie flick, called Otto; or, Up with Dead People.

Another of my sexually explicit art films, Otto also played at more than 150 film fests despite, or perhaps because of, the infamous gut-fucking scene, in which a gay zombie penetrates a hole in the stomach of a fellow gay zombie with his undead cock. While touring the world with the film I found myself in interviews making the lofty pronouncement that I believe zombie porn is the wave of the future, and that we will soon routinely see porous, corrupted flesh being penetrated by legions of lascivious zombies. (Zombie porn is practical: you can create your own orifice!)

So by way of a self-fulfilling prophecy, and to get the ball rolling (or, I suppose, balls), I have pulled together the funding for an Untitled Hardcore Zombie Project, to be shot in LA in August, and starring one of the biggest names in the adult entertainment industry, Francois Sagat and other wellknown stars. The Zombie FX will be created by LA-based FX whiz Joe Castro. The project will combine also the production efforts of such companies as Wurstfilm, Dark Alley Media and PPV Network and individuals like Amo Roca, Photographer and James Carman, my long companion as a Director of Photography. So get ready for a revolutionary zombie porn extravaganza! -Bruce LaBruce

Alpha Butt

Alphabeat (Or for the past 2 years, I've been calling them Alphabutt) released their last album in 2000-whatever to limited success and 1 single that I found cute to listen to. The other 3, not so much. I can safely say their first album was unremarkable and pretty boring compared to first single "Fascination", which had a naive innocence to it.

Come 2010, Alphabeat (whose second album was pushed back from Nov 2009) will release their second record "The Spell" on new label Polydor, after being separating from EMI/Charisma in January 2009. And if you missed bands like Wham!, Snap!, C + C Music Factory, or Ace Of Base, then this record is for you. There's not a song without that cheesy rhythmic 90's dancefloor keyboard chord progression, traded gender vocals, and Stine belting out some diva behavior. Lead single "The Spell", has already been floating around the internet as well as given a wide release. The song is fire. As well as sounding like the best of anything gay from the 90's. Alphabeat really took the sophomore slump seriously, delivering songs that not only improve upon their earlier work, but much like Goldfrapp, has helped them find a musical niche where they sound completely comfortable while still attempting new sounds.

Alphabeat - The Spell

Alphabeat - Fascination

When this record comes out, seriously buy it, because it's 1 of the top contenders for best pop record in a long ass time. YOUR MOVE NEXT, WHITNEY.

Fag School

Of course you all know by now Oakland's Brontez. You may remember him as Junx from Gravy Train!!!! or from his latest (excellent) music project The Younger Lovers. But, unless your a zinester, you may not know that he also makes an awesome zine called Fag School.

Fag School is totally funny and smart (and reminiscent of old school queercore/riot grrl zines, see: jigsaw, J.D.s, Outpunk, etc) cut and paste, typewritten zine and is such an awesome and necessary break from blogs and electronics and the like. Fag School features all sorts of different types of reviews including job reviews, blackout reviews (as in, you know, blackout drunk), cruising reviews, record reviews, and stories about assorted "romantic follies" and parties and stuff. You will also find the "Ask Allison" column where people ask Allison Wolfe (Bratmobile, Partyline) questions, interviews with bands and people like New Bloods, Jenna Riot, and founder of Lookout! Records Larry Livermore (amongst others), a fashion advice column from Telfar, articles about rollerbladers and other stuff from guest contributors, and tons of pictures of hot naked guys.

Brontez first started making Fag School a few years back and after a lag he recently put out issue #3. You can read the first issue on the Queer Zine Archive Project website BUT you can also write to Brontez for issues here! I HIGHLY recommend checking out Fag School, you won't regret it!

Also, The Younger Lovers' video "Danny" debuted on Logo recently, and the new video for Sha-Boo-Bee will be premiering soon! You can pick up the Younger Lovers' debut cd Newest Romantic Retard Disco now.

We posted this before, but check out this video too!

DJ Josh Peace Mustache Mix

Although I've never been, Mustache Mondays has got to be one of the best queer parties going! Over the last 2 years the LA party has had stellar guests like No Bra, Kingdom, Maluca, Sister Mantos, Icy Lytes, and about a million other rad DJs and performers. In celebration of Mustache Mondays 2 year anniversary, Mustache resident DJ Josh Peace has just released an awesome new mix!

You can listen to the mix right here, or click on the link to download!

Pop Stars Who Should Be Gay: Jo Kwon

There is one in every boyband, girlband, and country. Pop Stars who try to deceive the public with their fake love of the ladybits, man parts, etc. Remember when Melissa Etheridge and Lance Bass came out? And the whole world was like, "Um, duhhhhhhh". This situation needs to happen to a lot of others around the planet. Specifically, this guy:

HOW COME ALL THE FUN GAY SHIT NEVER HAPPENS ON US TELEVISION. And not that Chunk Bass Gossip Girl shit, you gotta be kidding me with that pathetic closed mouth mom kiss. Waiting for the good shit to happen is like watching frozen waffles melt. UGH. America needs to catch up cause right now, television is about as fun as eating saltpeter.

Anyways, apparently this guy's name is Jo Kwon, he has an ideal woman (named George), and is in some boyband called 2AM. Whatever he's doing at 2AM, it's sure to be packed with brute masculinity and steak. I kid. He's crafting and glueing rhinestones to skinny jeans. Just the way I like them.

Yum! Or "Ewwww" depending...

Self-Portrait

I am seriously gay for Jay-Jay Johanson. I forgot how good he was. Seriously, what is in the water in Sweden where it's just like, EVERYONE IS TALENTED. Starting off his career in 1996 with the release of his first studio album "Whiskey", Jay-Jay has managed to craft himself a career of smart, accessible, but just arty enough where he has remained below the radar from many. His most "mainstream" appearance has been doing guest vocals for The Knife on their song "Marble House" (That's him in the second verse, not some crazy voice machine). That and he's a total babe. Leave me alone, I like skinny white dudes.

His latest album, "Self-Portrait", released in 2008, has rapidly become one of my favorite albums. Not quite trip-hop (That trend is dead, leave it alone, even Portishead hates it), not quite a full band record, it's a slinky little pop record that fits the mood just right. In fact, I fell asleep to it last night. It sort of actually caused a nightmare. Nevermind. Forget this entire post.

Fagget Fairys + Palms Out Sounds

Haven't heard anything new from Fagget Fairys in a while, but one of my favorite blogs, Palms Out Sounds just posted a B.Rich remix of Roll The Dice from their latest album. So, that's cool....but one of the coolest things about this is that Palms Out have relaunched Remix Sundays!

If you are a reader of Palms Out, you'll remember Remix Sundays as a great weekly post featuring remixes of the popular jams and all crazy stuff you'd never heard before. If you haven't checked out Palms Out Sounds, DO IT. Besides being a blog, they are also responsible for introducing Fagget Fairys to the U.S. and being one of the first blogs (if not the first blog) to release records. They've also released music from Leif, Norrit & Queen Bea, AC Slater (and others) in addition to throwing parties and having their bloggers djing all over the world. They're the real deal.

Here's that B.Rich remix of Roll The Dice and check out Palms Out for the latest and greatest.

I fucking hate anime pt. 2

Boy love anime has completely ruined what life I ever had. Specifically: Junjou Romantica, Gakuen Heaven, and Antique Bakery. Whoever made these completely unrealistic portrayals of gay life deserves to be kicked in the face. And then knowing my stupid ass, I'd nurse them back to health.

I already live in crazy world to begin with. I have a weekly obsession that constantly changes. I'm not joking. I went through a huge curry phase and tried to learn how to make it. Let's just say my kitchen looked worse than San Frandisco post-earthquake. So what is it that anime taps into my head where I go super gaga over it?

BECAUSE A BITCH IS JEALOUS. If you have a relationship like this, chances are I probably fucking hate your guts. WHO DOES THAT? I wish some tall white-washed asian dude would take me on a date on a ferris wheel. I wish some asian dude would whisper sweet nothings in my stupid ear...well the one that's working at least (My right ear has been acting up post-flu and let me tell you, listening to "Funnel Of Love" by Wanda Jackson on the headphones is a bit wonky).

BL anime taps into my paranoid gay boy fears: I'm going to die by myself. Nobody will ever be that kind to me. How come they can eat and eat and never gain a pound? Then I think about it some more...it's fucking ANIME. It's not real. It's drawn by people who want to see their idea of sexy bump mommy and daddy spots with one another. It may be a portrayal of romanticized gay love, but the real thing is just so much better. Every boy will nab themselves a hottie in their life. It's not a race. When you know, you know. And if it's not right, kick that bitch to the curb.

Unless you're this bitch. You need some time to yourself for a while. PAININ'.

Benni E

After playing Homo A Go Go this summer and putting out the Microphone Influenza mixtape, Philadelphia's Benni E is one of the hottest rappers in queer hip hop (or hip hop in general!). She was cool enough to let us ask her some dorky questions and more importantly, offer up a song or two!

Check out the interview and jams after the cut!

YC: So, you've been releasing songs since at least a year now, but when did you first think "i can do this!" and start rapping/making music?

BE: I started professionally in November of 2007, after connecting with DJ Bunnystyle of Plastic Glamour Studio. Everything took off from that point. Before that I was writing all the time and doing spoken word events in Philly.

YC: If you weren't you and you heard your music, how would you describe it and which song do you think would be your favorite?

BE: i'd say this person is fun, but has a message. The beats she chooses are relevant but not stuck in trends. I would describe the music as heartwarming, energetic, creative, and inspiring.

YC:You've worked with Shunda K, DJ Kotchy, and one of our faves, Sgt. Sass...who are some of your dream collaborators?

BE: Some of my dream collaborators on an int'l level would be, Danger Mouse/Cee-Lo, Just Blaze, 9th Wonder, Pri the Honeydark, you know folks of that calibur regarding producers. I'd love to do some work with folks like Imogen Heap, CLP, Lady Xtra, Erase Errata, and just wonderful artists making music/art that is life changing. I'm really open to collaborations with everyone to be honest. I just really like to make music.

YC: You recently played Homo A Go Go and have played a bunch of shows all over the place. What can we expect from you going into 2010? Do you have an album in the works/will you be touring?

BE: Well I'll be touring next year definitely. The kinks are being worked out now. I'm in the midst of working on my second mix tape entitled The Ninth Oz Child. That'll be out by 2010. And God willing the album will be done for next year as well, but I want it to be good, so i go back to the drawing board often and rework songs.

Purchase Of The Month

Where can I find this and how much is it?

Hot Chocolate Boy

So I was reading one of the blogs I read (Big Stereo) and I came across this video from a band called Boy of Girl (formerly Moon Unit) for a song called Hot Chocolate Boy. I was like, "cool, an electropop/whatever version of Beat Happening's Hot Chocolate Boy, that sounds sort of interesting." Not so. It IS NOT a version of Beat Happening's song at all! It's not even a cover of the Hole cover of Hot Chocolate Boy. It's just another song called Hot Chocolate Boy. Who's gonna name a song Hot Chocolate Boy when there's already a song called Hot Chocolate Boy? It's not like that is a common phrase.

To be fair though, Boy of Girl do mention on their Myspace blog that the song is inspired by The Smiths, Beat Happening, and "the punk lust teen spirit that defines the idylic time in a young music fan's life when they hang out all night with their crush, listening to their favourite songs." That's cute and all, but I don't hear it.

Anyways,

Here's the Boy of Girl video for a song called Hot Chocolate Boy that I can't decide if I like or not, Beat Happening's Hot Chocolate Boy, and for good measure, a Youtube video of Hole's cover medley of The Germs' Forming and Hot Chocolate Boy.

(It's cold and rainy so it's a hot chocolate kind of day)
