The Gay 90's: Clueless Cake Boys

The 90's was a time of cultural explosions: raves were in, torn baggy jeans, and bands like The Cranberries ruled the airwaves. On top of this, a little film called "Clueless" was released in 1995 to rave reviews and brought to light a whole new sub community: the obscuro-fag (gay dudes who literally belong in a totally different decade). As I recall, Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz, tries to seduce a young newly transferred boy named Christian time and time again to no success. Oh man, I also totally forgot that it's the first time I ever heard "cake boy" used to describe a gay person. And frankly, what's wrong with cake? Absolutely nothing. If you don't like cake, you're pretty much a terrorist in my book.
Christian was played by a young actor named Justin Walker, who to this day has not had any other success (look it up on Wikipedia, he literally has done no film work since 2005 and it was a Clueless documentary). WHATEVER. We all swooned over Christian and his fashionable ways, his cute bucket seat vintage car, and his Billie Holiday CDs on stereo blast. It's not Cher's fault she didn't know who Billie was, she's a valley girl of the 90s. We were all listening to like, No Mercy, Ace Of Base, and random assorted club compilation albums. But Christian was different. He liked to watch Spartacus, was oblivious to Cher's cookie dough roll, and had cold feet instead of a hard dick. He chivalrously saved Tai Frasier from plummeting to her death at the mall cause 2 meathead bros didn't understand "no". He was a cake boy through and through and for that, we love Justin Walker as Christian Stovitz. He was an obscuro-fag through and through, rejecting/oblivious to present trends and getting his mack on with other cake boys at parties The Mighty Mighty Bosstones happen to be playing.

Bat for Lashes is Out!

Ok, so I wish. Bat for Lashes (aka Natasha Khan) is IN Out...as in Out Magazine. This month's issue of the "Fashion, Style, Celebrity, Opinion, for the Modern Gay Man" magazine features an interview with my one of my straight girl crushes. She talks a little about her gay following, the comparisons to Kate Bush, performing, and other stuff. I wish they would have asked her about how lesbians LOVE her, but I suppose Out is for the modern gay MAN.
Anyways, you can check out the interview HERE...and check out her latest video (for the song Pearl's Dream) and a million videos of people covering Daniel after the cut!

Shunda K Presents...

So over the last year or so there have been a lot of happenings and drama in the world of Tampa-based lesbian rap group Yo Majesty. When the group started it consisted of Shon B, Jwl B, and Shunda K. Shon B left the group, Shunda K and Jwl B went on tour, Jwl B went to jail then rejoined the tour, when Jwl B came back, Shunda K left...and then Shon B came back. Confused? Yeah, me too.
With all the drama it's kind of hard to figure out who the future Yo Majesty may include, but in the present Shunda K keeps grindin'. She's toured with Peaches and appeared on her latest record (I Feel Cream), she's playing shows all over Florida, and she's released of couple of FREE mixtapes online!
Take a listen to her Kollaborations mixtape (where Peaches returns the favor and guests) and Shunda K Presents: The Best Eva Written...Outkast, where she raps over an instrumental Outkast record and is the first in the Best Eva Written mixtape series she has in the works.
Also, with or without Shunda, Yo Majesty will be playing some dates in Europe this Summer so keep your eyes open for that!
Here are links to Shunda K's mixtapes and a couple of videos of Shunda/Peaches/Yo Majesty. Enjoy!

Buildings stretch away from the earth

Kate Lee is a talented singer-songwriter, playing numerous instruments for numerous Boston based bands. Her first band Kate Lee & The Opposites Attract released an album through The Whitehaus Family. Kate and I had been hanging out, wanting to make music, but lacking a name or instruments. Actually, I think she had instruments, I had a crappy Roland 8 (YES 8) keyboard and had been making bedroom tapes for a while then. I remember earlier that day watching Paula Abdul on YouTube and saying "Hey, you should call yourself Kate Lee & The Opposites Attract" and that is how they were born. Though inactive for some time now, Kate has emerged in a slew of new bands, namely The Points North and Gracious Calamity, who will be doing a summer tour across the U.S. In August, they will be gracing Chicago with their presence at Weirder Park in Wicker Park (whoever can explain as to where the hell that is, it would be appreciated). I'm pretty excited to see my friend as well as her band, as it's been years since I last saw her. Here are some mp3s of her work.

YoungCreature pals Sgt. Sass released a video for their jam Faggot Snappin' a couple weeks ago, and we're just now getting around to posting it. It's hard to keep up with all the haps in the queer music world.

Sleeping giants

I find myself coming around to Sigur Ros every few years or so. While the whole "Hopelandic" big bag of bullshit lingers around (OK whatever, he sings in made up tongue when he creates melodies but hasn't formulated lyrics), Jonsi (lead singer/guitarist) has collaborated with his boyfriend Alex to create an instrumental album entitled "Riceboy Sleeps". I don't know who Riceboy is, but I have fallen asleep to Jonsi and Alex many a time. Collaborations include Amiina and the Kópavogsdætur Choir. It also allegedly includes a performance by the last known castrati singer recorded. THAT MEANS HIS BALLS WERE CUT OFF SO HE COULD SING HIGH AND PURE FOREVER. It's a beautiful record to put on, whether it be the soundtrack to a lazy afternoon or falling asleep in bed and honestly, it's cool to hear some music made by queers that I really dig (you failed, Rufus Wainwright, now cut it out).

HNYSNDSYSTM

Honey Soundsystem is a San Francisco based queer DJ collective/production group who throw a weekly party called Honey Sundays at the Paradise Loft in SF's SOMA neighborhood AND who were recently added to the 2009 Homo A Go Go lineup. If guests like Horsemeat Disco, Hercules & Love Affair, and Cosmo Vitelli are any indication of what a Honey Soundsystem party is like, it should be one of the best ways to spend a Sunday night in San Francisco for sure!
The Honey resident DJs will be appearing throughout the weekend at Homo A Go Go and doing their usual thing on Sunday night, so be sure to check out the fagged out dirty disco of Honey Soundsystem!
To give you a taste of the Honey Soundsystem crew, here's a mix from resident DJ Robot Hustle.
"The vinyl hustler spits out another slick mix of oddities and sounds you might need to put a ladder outside your window to get in late at night. Complete with robot tape fuzz to keep your dick hard, this one is short and sweet." (from the Honey Soundsystem website)

Oh Jo, Please Don't Go

When I was living in London for a short bit, I would tune into a little Radio 1 show segment hosted by Jo Whiley called "Live Lounge". The loose concept of the show was to interview up and coming bands and have them perform their current single of choice and a cover. Often, these covers were from an entirely different genre of music, i.e. The Saturdays covering Frankie Valli or Gossip covering Kanye West. Most times the covers ruled, more often than not, they didn't do so well (Florence & The Machine, I'm talking to you and your butchering of Beyonce). After 12 years of The Jo Whiley Show, BBC Radio 1 has replaced her slot with some other girl. Whatever. Don't care about that person. Jo will be moved to a weekend slot of some sort. Anyways, this show ruled. It was pretty much my only friend besides another girl named Laura I had attended summer camp with who lived in the UK. Seriously, for 3 1/2 years on and off I did nothing in that country.
Also I remember hearing this interview she did with The Game and he was going off on how faggots weren't real men or something really gangsta and stupid and she was like WTF and went on this huge speech and apologized. This proves 2 things: Jo Whiley is kind of cool. That and The Game is really stupid and had 2 good songs and probably will never get any further than that.
Anyways, this post is a tribute to Radio 1's The Jo Whiley Show and a thank you for all the awesome music in a queer's time of isolation in some wacky country (although really, what country ISN'T wacky these days?).

DJ Total Freedom & NGUZUNGUZU Club Vortex Mix

If you are in L.A. (or have super cool friends there) you've probably heard of Wildness, one of the city's craziest and queerest dance parties. The resident DJs/hosts DJ Total Freedom and NGUZUNGUZU recently played Kingdom's Club Vortex party in New York and made a totally sweet mix for the affair. On the Dutty Artz blog the tracklisting is explained like this: "live mixing on vinyl + parts on ableton + parts on CDJs + live sound effects, vocals, instruments over the whole thing". It's got a lot going on and features a lot of stuff I've never heard before, which is always a plus. I downloaded the mix about a week ago and have been listening to it on repeat since, so I thought I'd share!

From the moment I was taught to resist the education

The Hidden Cameras are not your average queer/queer friendly band. Described as "gay church folk music" by their leader Joel Gibb, The Hidden Cameras go balls deep into gay culture. They sing songs about fisting, golden showers, fucking, gay love, and marriage all over symphonic, lush landscapes. After a 3 year absence with the release of "AWOO", The Hidden Cameras are set to return in September with the release of "Origin: Orphan" on Arts & Crafts Records. Think of them sort of like a gay Harry Nilsson or a less gay Barry Manilow. Anyways, here is the first released track from their upcoming album. The song is called "Walk On" and I sort of really wished it was a cover of "Walk On By" by Dionne Warwick who fucking SPOKE AT THE COLUMBIA COLLEGE '09 GRADUATION AND I TOTALLY FORGOT TO GO. Anyways, I totally have a mancrush on this band and have for years. I can play melodica if you ever need me, Joel.

It puts the lotion on it's skin

Female masking.
It's something Jacqueline Mary and I recently found out about/became obsessed with. For those of you unfamiliar, Wikipedia breaks it down like this: "Female masking is a sub-form of cross-dressing that involves, in addition to the wearing of women's clothing, a mask (usually made from latex) that gives a pseudo-real representation of a female face."
I don't think I have any words that can really explain this, just watch the videos and take it all in. Don't judge.

Queer fun in Chicago this week!
So after everyone's Pride/Shame hangovers have subsided, the city of Chicago has seemed a little off kilter the last week. No street drinking, combined with this amazing 70 degree weather, it for sure does not feel like a big gay summer to me.
However, this is such an awesome week to be queer in Chicago!
Friday June 10th is going to be a super fun night. First, it's Think Pink Radio Friday at Wang's (3317 N Broadway)! It's a ball, and not just because this blog has a friend-crush on that blog -

A) Wangs is a gorgeous teeny tiny baby bar with just enough room for the lighting to accentuate your best features, without the harassment of the usual Boystown/Wrigleyville fence sitters, stroller pushers, and lost trixies. So so so good. (Make sure you check out the artwork in the bathroom. Gold star lezzies, you might wanna avert your eyes at first... I sure did ... but I've grown to love it)
and!
B) DJ Stinky Pinky plays super-fun music in such a chilled out, non-pretentious atmosphere! Seriously sweet remixes and queer dance tracks, he brings the perfect background track to your fancy shmancy martinis and $5 Tecate + Tequila shots (note: DANGEROUS). I almost don't want to post about it, because I love it so much and like always being able to get a spot in there.... but I'll share my secrets with you. The Creatures will be pre-gaming here for sure before we go see...

MEN live at Berlin! Do I really have to say any more than that? Accompanied by the Chances DJs and DJ Greg Haus (who also plays the freakiest and bestest music videos every Monday at a certain employer of 1/2 of the Creatures). I'm super super excited to finally see MEN! Working on the weekends really ruins my shot at seeing any good touring acts, so I'm a lucky girl to get a shot at it this Friday.
But hey, so you work on the weekends too? Bummer, but trust... we've got you. On Tuesday, July 14th, get ready for bffs of the blog, SF / PDX band Forever!

They are totally adorable, need I say more? Oh wait, we already did. In the midst of their US tour (have you seen them yet? If you live west of Chicago, there's a good chance they're on their way to your town!), they're stopping by to give us a taste of their sweet, sweet medicine. They'll be at Ronny's Bar (2101 N California ave), which has the most amazing PBR lined bathroom in the world. If you're squeamish or prone to squatting in public restrooms, stay home. Show starts at 9pm, and playing with The Cellphones, who I don't know a damn thing about but this girl has got a VOICE! So so so excited for this show and getting very pumped to get my dykebitch drink on in such fine company.
What are you doing this week? Have we missed anything particularly fabulous? Will we see you there?

Telepathe ARE musicians

Telepathe just did an interview with XLR8R TV where they discuss their musical backgrounds, their love affair with The Cure, and how the dudes at Pitchfork took the liberty to discuss their personal lives, among other things. Also, I just found Jenny Lewis (of Rilo Kiley/Foxfire/Troop Beverly Hills fame) has released a video for the song "Fernando" off her sophmore LP "Acid Tongue". A cute video with a 60's mod spy theme. There are also some cameos by Zooey Deschanel and The Watson Twins slapping around "Fernando". And Jenny Lewis is looking sublime. I've found my summer fashions. Unfortunately, she debuted it on Perez Hilton, and we all know how much I hate Perez Hilton. He's slow on shit, focuses on untalented gimmicky bands, steals from D-Listed, and is all butt buddy with Katy Perry, another person I can't stand (BONER DYKE). However, I love Jenny Lewis, and who knew the girl has got a pair of hot gams on her? You can check out the video HERE.
Also, who the fuck is Terrell Carter? Apparently, he's in a bunch of Tyler Perry "Madea" films and the brah has just been outed by his ex of sorts. DL THUGS MAKE YOUR WAY TO CHICAGO THANX.

Almost too sexy for the club

The Sugababes are a weird band for me. Less consistent sound-wise compared to Girls Aloud, the Sugababes have had more singles flop recently than their UK girl group counter parts (as I'm writing this, someone is blasting Lady Gaga outside my window and I'm not happy). However, musically, they take more chances than most pop groups around. Their new single "Get Sexy" is getting ready to be released after their failed album "Catfights & Spotlights" and its bum of singles "Girls" and "No Can Do". I thought that album was pretty killer, so I dunno. They seemed to have switched up their sound again, going for more electro dancefloors and signing a US record deal with Jay-Z (they had some measure of success with "Hole In The Head" on the Billboard charts years ago). The new single almost resembles the Paradiso Girls, in that Lil' Jon sounding production kind of way. I mean, it'll be sure to get the gays and trixies dancing, but as for the mainstream and underground, I don't know if it'll have that much of an impact. This is probably when you should break-up, especially since Mutya is no longer in the band.

Zid and Jancy

For promotion for their upcoming film, Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon Leavitt have filmed a mash up of sorts, combining a scene from "500 Days Of Summer" with the heartbreaking climax scene from "Sid and Nancy" as part of some MSN video series. I sort of like this concept. I really feel that art is finally expanding into this universally approachable thing. No longer do you have to pay out the ass for some fancy college (Yeah, I went to SAIC and I'd like my money back, kthnxbi!), it's about the execution of an idea and trusting people to think for themselves. That's not to say people aren't stupid, there are still tons out there, but it's less black and white for me now than it ever has been. I'm excited about my optimism. Anyways, the 2 really are awesome in this clip, I love them both. Hello, she was in "Almost Famous" and he was on "3rd Rock From The Sun". Strangely, I also went to highschool with Joseph Gordon Leavitt's like, 2nd cousin or something random like that, and the gene pool really is all cute. You can watch the clip HERE.
Zooey Deschanel also recently did a song for Cotton, entitled so creatively "The Fabric Of My Life" which has entered the pantheon of specifically created commercial songs that are actually kind of good. Even though it's about...cotton.

Kingdom + Black Box + Martha Wash

So...last weekend was "Gay Pride" and I feel like I've just now recovered. I'm gonna put this out there: I hate Pride. I think that it's mostly just a way for otherwise straight businesses to suck money out of gays for a weekend. However, I do love drinking on the street, so I did a lot of "Pride" activities. One of those activities that was actually pretty awesome was seeing (mostly hearing) Martha Wash.

Martha Wash, if you didn't know already, sang on a bunch of 90's dance hits including C&C Music Factory's "Everybody Dance Now" as well as Black Box's "Everybody Everybody" and was in the Weather Girls (It's Raining Men) AND sang backup for Sylvester. So, she's pretty much a gay icon across the board. All these years later Martha still sounds great and I feel having her perform this year was great timing, with the 90's being super "in" right now. I still hate gay pride events, but I'm glad the organizers booked Martha Wash.
This brings me to the kind of gay pride I can stand behind, queer/gays/whatever being awesome and not wearing shirts with numbers on them, or just wearing shirts. One such person is New York's DJ/Producer Kingdom. I've written about Kingdom before because I'm a big fan of what he does, but it seems fitting to post this remix he did recently of a Black Box song featuring Martha Wash.
It's like everything now makes sense.
Here's Kingdom's remix of Black Box's "I Don't Know Anybody Else" and the classic "Everybody Everybody". Enjoy!

You can be my girl

Look at this creepy dude. Who would've thought he'd be responsible for a quality pop song? Martin Solveig has teamed up with Dragonette to release a Jean Paul Gaultier influenced single and video. Unfortunately, he's also responsible for producing that Bob Sinclair record with that "feel the love generation wah ah oh oh oh oh" crap song on it. The video is pretty monstrous, with couture white and black, a giant entrance hall, models doing choreographed dance, and Jean Paul Gaultier makes an appearance. Enjoy.

Unlady like

If you're like me, everyday is a struggle between the cool and commercial. The hipster and the bland. The know and the oblivious. It pains you to listen to Britney Spears, but you do it because you secretly love "Womanizer". You pretend to be vegan but get wet at the thought of a grilled cheese. Sometimes a kid just needs to fag out. That is why I love the UK's newest girlband Girls Can't Catch. Unfortunately, I do not love their name. Their first single "Keep Your Head Up" has been bouncing around for a bit now, but finally a studio version has appeared and it is a euro club banger. Pop overseas has always been more influenced by electro and techno, so it's no surprise that Girls Aloud's producers Xenomania have carried that trend over to Girls Can't Catch. Electric guitars wail, synths pump out basslines so thick I couldn't deepthroat it, and the three members chant a chorus so icy it turns the song into a threat. I do love my indie bag of bullshit but every now and then (ok, like, every other day) a carefully picked single from the man's corporate machine is just as memorable.
